Commentary:

The first three minutes of this game went really well for the Hartford Wolfpack.  They had a 1-goal lead... and then the wheels fell off in a big way.  Thirteen unanswered goals destroyed Hartford's hope of reaching the Steyskal Cup Final.  For the Calgary Flames, it was target practice - getting ready for the big game.  The only question is - can they maintain this pace in the Final?

Commentary:

The New York Islanders came into this game with a 0-2-1 record against the Guelph Storm.  They had never beat this team but you would never know that from watching this game.  If you're looking for the ultimate playoff contest, this was it!  The Islanders gave up three goals in the first period but never gave up.  They produced three goals of their own in the second period - forcing another overtime between these two teams.  In fact, the second period was almost played completely in the defensive end of the Guelph Storm.  Guelph goalie Alex K. worked extra hard to keep the Islanders from winning it in regulation.

It turned out to be enough - just a little over 4 minutes into the overtime period, Storm forward Isaiah M. was able to take a pass from Diego V. and rip a snapshot through a screen, beating NY goalie Evan Z.  The Islanders just came up short!

Commentary:

One would have to go back through the 11 year history of the SHL to find a game where one player factored in all 10 of his team's goals.  Record or not, Kevin I.'s performance was one for the ages.  The Guelph captain dominated the entire game as the New York Islander defense never seemed to want to step up on him.  But then, neither did the Islander offense as the New York forecheck was virtually non-existent all game.  One has to feel sorry for the Islander goalie, Evan Z. who did his best to keep his team in this one.

This was not the way the Islanders wanted to head into the playoffs next week.  They will face this same Storm team - minus their captain, which at least has to give New York hope in terms of advancing to the Steyskal Cup Final.

Commentary:

These two teams will meet again next week in the first round of the Steyskal Cup Playoffs.  The question remains for Hartford... can they stop Calgary captain Klemens K.?  The Flames leader figured in 9 of the team's 10 goals and finished the season leading the league with 37 goals.  Last week he couldn't seem to hit the broad side of a barn against the Guelph Storm - this week he lit the lamp 7 times.

The Hartford Wolfpack's biggest problem continues to be their lack of a bench.  This team shows signs of life at times but never seems to have anybody to offer any relief on the floor.  Fatigue is Hartford's number one enemy.  If they can solve that, they could then maybe focus on shutting down the other team.

Commentary:

This game was actually much closer that the numbers would lead you to believe.  The Guelph Storm scored 4 goals late in the second period in a span of about 2 and 1/2 minutes.  It was the first real difficulty faced by the Calgary Flames, whose only loss this year prior to this came on a forfeit.  A combination of factors led to their demise in this game.  First, Guelph captain Kevin I. had a great 5 goal game with four of his goals coming straight off turnovers.  Second, Calgary captain, Klemens K., who has been lighting up opposing defenses all season, found difficulty with the Storm's play in their own zone - combined with many of his shots which didn't reach the net.  Finally, rookie Flames goalie Robert A. proved he was human - the Calgary netminder leads all goalies with 4 shut-outs and had a GAA of under 1.  Everybody has a bad day once in awhile.

Could this game be a preview of the Steyskal Cup Final?  If so, this has got to give the Guelph players confidence and cause the Calgary team to consider other routes to the back of the opposition's net.

Commentary:

The Calgary offensive machine rolls on.  Flames captain Klemens K. figured in all 9 goals tonight.  The only concern has to be injury or something that might keep him out of the lineup for the playoffs.  If other teams don't find a way to shut him down, he and his Calgary teammates will be hoisting the Steyskal Cup in a few short weeks.

The New York Islanders are a team with some offensive credentials but their scoring abilities seem to dry up against the Flames.  Rookie goalie Aliza S. was hung out to dry on numerous occasions and played quite well.  But with Flames goalie Robert A. notching his league-leading 4th shut out, the Islanders are not alone in realizing that the Flames are the favorites as we move into the playoffs.

Commentary:

The Hartford Wolfpack had one win going into this game and that win was the result of a forfeit.  They doubled their victory total with this win and it was well earned.  Recent addition Kamil K. continues to inspire the Wolfpack and leads the team in scoring.  He posted his first career hat-trick and along with recently returned captain Jonathan G. appear to have this Hartford club pointed in the right direction with the playoffs just around the corner.

The New York Islanders are the 2nd leading team in scoring but they couldn't seem to get anything going in this contest.  2015 Calder Trophy winner Aliza S. notched her third goal of the season to cut the Hartford lead in half but besides a goal in the second by Manny F., the Islanders just couldn't manufacture much offense.  They will need to solve some of their defensive lapses as well.

Commentary:

It appears that the Guelph Storm should have saved some of the goals from their last game (a 9-goal effort against the Wolfpack).  This was a close constest and clearly a defensive showcase as the leagues leading goal scorers never found the back of the net.  Guelph Storm goalie, Alex K. gave up just one - a turnover into the high slot that was pounced on by Gabriel S. who snapped a wrister just over the Storm goalie's glove hand.

At the other end of the floor, the Calgary Flames' rookie net-minder Robert A. stood tall.  He recorded his second career shut out.  Calgary's win proves they can win against a top tier goalie without their captain recording a point.  This does not bode well for the Flames opponents in the upcoming playoffs.

Commentary:

For the first time in the 11 year history of the SHL a penalty shot was awarded.  In the middle of the 1st period, Flames captain Klemens K. bust through the middle of the floor when Islander goalie Matt C. threw his stick at the puck.  This resulted in a penalty shot awarded to the Calgary captain.  Matt C. redeemed himself when he stymied the Flames leading scorer.

Unfortunately for New York, they could not provide much offense.  Their lone goal came off a beautiful one timer set up by Alfredo L. and Aliza S., giving Manny F. an easy shot.  But that was all that the Calgary goalie, Robert A., would give up.  Calgary's offense came off of three take-aways and goals by Klemens K.

Commentary:

The question that results from this game is... can the Guelph Storm produce goals without their captain?  All 9 Storm goals came off the stick of their talented leader, and 4 of those were unassisted.  Late in the game Diego V. set up Storm captain Kevin I. three times.  But is there anyone else who can dent the net?

Conversely, for the Hartford Wolfpack... can this team generate offense?  They waited until late in each period before getting a goal and their defense let their goalie, Jonathan G., hung out to dry on far too many occasions.  This Hartford team could surprise in the playoffs, but they need to get their act together and do so quickly.

Wolfpack 0/1 - short hand goal given up

Commentary:

For the first time this season, the Hartford Wolfpack put up some decent offense and put a scare into the New York Islanders.  Despite being without any subs, the Wolfpack took an early lead and even scored a short-handed goal.  Hartford's new addition, veteran Kamil K. added some spark to the Wolfpack offense and the team went into the second period leading.

But the Islanders special teams turned the tables.  Despite giving up a shortie, the Isles scored a power play goal and a short-handed goal of their own.  That shortie turned out to give them a lead they would not relinquish.  Two late goals in the last minute of the game turned out to be the final nails in the Hartford coffin.

Commentary:

If there is a record for unassisted goals, then the Calgary Flames must have set one as all 5 of their goals were unassisted.  This might be an indictment of the Guelph Storm's defense but Calgary captain Klemens K. was stealing passes and sniping from everywhere.  If it wasn't for the outstanding play of Storm goalie Alex K., this game would have been out of hand within the first 5 minutes.

With some adjustments on defense, Guelph shut down the potent Flames offense and even tallyied in the second period.  But it wasn't enough.  The Flames look to be the team to beat as their offense is hitting on all cylinders so far.

This games was actually a lot closer than it appears on the score sheet.  The New York Islanders held the powerful Calgary Flames offense in check for most of the first period and even had a chance late in the first to cut the lead in half.  But the second period was a showcase for the Flames captain and assistant captain.  Klemens K. and Kamil L. lit up the scoreboard with 6 points a piece and had some dandy one time goals that the New York offense just couldn't seem to stop.

The Islanders came into this game with the lead in SHL scoring but had their doors blown off by Calgary.  Can the Islanders recover?  Can this Flames offense be stopped???

Commentary:

Even though the season is only 3 weeks old, this game might turn out to be the game of the year!  Guelph and New York battled in a back and forth game that ended with a Storm victory in a shoot-out.  All of Guelph's goals, including the shoot-out winner came off the stick of Storm captain Kevin I.  The Islanders sneaky forward Manny F. led New York with 3 goals and an assist.

The Storm shot out to an early lead only to see it disappear in a 15 second span in the middle of the first.  Guelph rallied to tie the game going into the second period and then quickly started the second with an early goal.  That lead lasted all of a minute and a half as New York's leading goal-scorer, Alfredo L. tied the game again.  The Storm surged ahead a few minutes later only to see the Islanders tie the game with a little over 5 minutes left.

The overtime period saw a few chances at either end.  But Guelph goalie Alex K. stole the show in the shoot-out - coming way out of his net to challenge the New York shooters.  The Islanders never were able to adjust.  On the other end, Matt C. flashed his glove and left pad to stymie the Storm shooters only to see the Guelph captain rip a shot just inside the right post.  It was a great game!

Commentary:

The Calgary Flames seem to be the offensive powerhouse this year.  They have averaged 8 goals in their first two games and unlike their thumping of the Islanders in week 1, this time the offense was spread around.  Forward Gabriel S. led all scorers with 3 points (2G, 1A) while defenseman Kamil L. put in two goals from the back end.  Calgary Captain Klemens K. had a goal and an assist to go along with his 9 points from week 1.

Meanwhile, the Guelph Storm have some positives to build on.  This team has a solid netminder in Alex K. and speed and shooting ability up front in their captain, Kevin I.  But this team looked tentative in this game on the forecheck and their defense was paralyzed by the quick puck movement of the Flames.  They have the talent but will they bring it next time out?

Commentary:

In week 1, the New York Islanders looked nothing like the team that played today.  Outplayed and startled, the Islanders couldn't keep pace with the Calgary Flames.  This week they blew away a Hartford Wolfpack team that looked an awful lot like New York in their first game.

Hartford was forced to forfeit their first game so they were coming into this game with many rookies playing their first game - and they looked like it.  New York, on the other hand, looked like seasoned veterans - controlling the pace of the game and almost scoring at will.  Is this just an aberration or is this what things will look like the rest of the year for both clubs?

Commentary:

For the just the second time in the 11 year history of the SHL, a team was forced to forfeit a game because they could not put a full contingent of players on the floor.  There are NO STATISTICS for this game other than the win for the Guelph Storm and a loss for the Hartford Wolfpack.

Commentary:

It's hard to win a hockey game when you are out-shot by your opponent by 25 shots.  This was the uphill battle that the New York Islanders faced in their season debut against the Calgary Flames.  Both teams started rookie goal-tenders but it turned out to be a shooting gallery for poor Enrique S., who made some spectacular saves early on to keep his team in the game.

Flames captain Klemens K. led all scorers with 9 points (7G & 2A) - something the league hasn't seen since the days of all-time leading scorer Marcin Gawlak back in 2010-11.  Two early goals by the Islanders just couldn't hold up with the onslaught brought on by this Calgary team.  It should be interesting to see if they can keep up this torrid scoring pace throughout the year.
